Theodore Roosevelt (Nobel)

Back to all People

Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt served two terms as U.S. President during which he recognized big business as a crucial component of the economy, but sought to prosecute the "bad trusts", instigating 44 antitrust lawsuits.   He was also the first American to win a Nobel Prize. Roosevelt was also equally committed to conservation. During his presidency, Mr. Roosevelt established the U.S. Forest Service, 150 national forests and 5 national parks, resulting in the protection of 230 million acres of public land. His understanding of Biblical principles played a significant role in carrying out his duties as president and as confirmed when he noted: "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education." President Roosevelt also exhibited a visionary sense raising concerns about the future when he said: "The thought of modern industry in the hands of Christian charity is a dream worth dreaming. The thought of industry in the hands of paganism is a nightmare beyond imagining. The choice between the two is upon us." Could this predicted nightmare be accelerating in the 21st century with technology, such as artificial intelligence, being controlled by a secular society devoid of Christian ethics?
